Those of you who attend our learning series at The Mather, Overture, or Avidor Evanston know we think highly of WhatsApp. It's a great way to communicate with family and friends who use different devices (Apple vs. Android), or to keep in touch with loved ones overseas.

Unfortunately WhatsApp is not immune to pig butchering scams. Below is an example of a scammy text message I received recently via WhatsApp. This one almost got me! Thankfully WhatsApp alerted me that the message was from a business, rather than an individual.

*Note the use of a cute baby profile pic to make the sender seem innocuous. :(

🔒 Ways to stay safe:

  • Do not feel obligated to response to a message if you cannot confirm the identity of the sender.
  • If WhatsApp identifies the sender as a business, we strongly recommend blocking the sender.
  • Remember: don't be swayed by familiarity, cute pictures, or other emotional bids. Scammers rely on our sentimental (rather than rational) response.
